Find your way through a branch

Don Quijote, often called Donki, is a discount store with food, toiletries, souvenirs and more. Check the floor guide, shelf price and payment signs. If eligible, ask about this branch’s tax-free service and the rules for your purchase date. Hours and stock vary.

Tax-free rules: through October 31 / from November 1, 2026

On this page

Don Quijote is a Japanese discount variety store with an unusually broad mix of everyday goods in one place. Residents use it for snacks, toiletries and other practical purchases; travelers can also look for travel supplies or souvenirs. One branch may feel like a compact neighborhood shop; another may have many floors. The item you want is never guaranteed to be in stock.

A route through a busy store
  1. Find the floor guideLocate your category first. Ask staff if the signs or aisles are hard to follow.
  2. Check the itemRead the shelf price, size and any restrictions. Compare the actual total before buying.
  3. Find the right checkoutCheck accepted payment methods and, if relevant, the branch’s tax-free counter.

An orientation aid, not a floor plan: stock, layout, services and hours vary by branch.

The aisles can be dense. Treat the floor guide as your map. If you cannot find a category, use the question in Useful Japanese below to ask staff. A larger MEGA Don Quijote is a separate general-merchandise format; larger does not mean every product or service is available. For an urgent item, check the particular branch’s listing and opening hours in Don Quijote's official store search before making a trip. A discount-store label also does not prove that any one item is the cheapest nearby.

Why the aisles feel different

Don Quijote calls its densely stocked display approach 圧縮陳列 (asshuku chinretsu). Its official FAQ describes convenience + discount + amusement as the idea behind it. For a visitor, that means the search through snacks, daily goods, cosmetics or travel accessories can be part of the experience. That is an editorial description, not a promise about every branch’s layout or prices. You may enter for toothpaste and discover that the phone cables are on another floor; use the floor guide instead of guessing.

What travelers commonly look for

Travel supplies, small daily goods, cosmetics, snacks and souvenirs can be convenient to browse in one stop. The operator’s current corporate description lists food, household goods, electronics and clothing among its merchandise, while its 2025 hit awards included food and beauty items. That award reflects a defined 2024–25 period, not a permanent ranking or a recommendation to buy a particular product. Stock changes by store and season. Food, electrical accessories, branded products and bulky purchases need a little more care: check the item’s specification, return conditions and how it will fit in your luggage. For a medicine question, use a qualified seller or pharmacist and the drugstore guide rather than choosing from an unfamiliar shelf by appearance.

Don Quijote’s official store icons distinguish services such as tax-free shopping and ATMs by branch. Its visitor FAQ lists payment options but also shows that some overseas methods are available only at selected stores. At the checkout, confirm the accepted method and the amount on the register. Keep the receipt, especially for a high-value or tax-free purchase; returns can be restricted and depend on the item and store policy.

Tax-free: check your purchase date

Last verified September 29, 2026. The rules differ for purchases through October 31 and from November 1, 2026. At last verification, Donki’s English tax-free page described the purchase-point process; use the Japan Tourism Agency’s transition guidance for the national change. Ask whether this branch participates and whether you are an eligible purchaser.

Date-sensitive processWhen do you pay and when could you receive a refund?

Through Oct 31, 2026

  1. At the shopEligible purchase may be tax-free at checkout.
  2. At departureFollow the current customs and goods rules.

From Nov 1, 2026

  1. At the shopPay the tax-inclusive price.
  2. At departurePresent your passport for customs confirmation within 90 days; keep goods available before checking luggage.
  3. After confirmationThe shop or its provider refunds the tax-equivalent amount.

Only eligible purchases at participating shops qualify. Ask the shop how its refund works; do not consume tax-free goods in Japan. Japan Tourism Agency: current traveler guidance.

For purchases under the refund method from November 1, 2026, official guidance requires you to present your passport at an airport or seaport tax-free procedure terminal within 90 days of purchase, with all eligible goods available for possible inspection before you check luggage. Tax-free goods you consume in Japan do not qualify for departure confirmation. The special packaging rule for consumables ends, but do not plan to use a tax-free snack or cosmetic during your trip and then receive a refund. Check departure steps and the shop’s refund timing close to travel, particularly when older merchant pages or screenshots describe the earlier method.

No. Check the current hours of the branch you want. Store formats and services also vary.

Is every item at Donki the cheapest?

No claim like that is reliable for every item. Compare the actual shelf price, quantity, quality and return terms when it matters to you.
